Free Flanders Field American Cemetery Smartphone App Available for Download

Published September 3, 2015

During the Ypres-Lys Campaign of World War I, four American divisions fought alongside their Allied counterparts in Belgium and northeastern France, providing critical reinforcements to war-weary armies that had been fighting for four long years. Many Americans lost their lives in the fight to liberate Belgium.

As the only American World War I cemetery in Belgium more than 400 Americans are buried or memorialized at Flanders Field American Cemetery. To tell this story, the American Battle Monuments Commission has released the Flanders-Field American Cemetery smartphone app. Free to download in the Apple iTunes Store and the Android Google Play Store, this official U.S. government app serves as your personal tour guide of the cemetery.

This app allows you to:

  • Plan your visit to include driving directions, operating hours, and parking information
  • Learn the stories of the Americans buried there, and find their burial locations
  • Explore the cemetery grounds, and learn about the design and layout
  • Take a cemetery tour in as little as one hour, or spend the entire day exploring the site.
  • Understand the U.S. military’s role in World War I
  • See a map of the cemetery, including key points of interest

You can use the app at the cemetery, or an ocean away. You don’t have to be in Belgium to learn about this World War I site, where 368 Americans are buried and 43 Americans are memorialized on the Walls of the Missing.

This is one of six mobile apps thus far developed by ABMC. Apps featuring Cambridge American Cemetery, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc and Sicily-Rome American Cemetery are also available for download.
